Space Shuttle Commemorative Geocoin
This Space Shuttle geocoin commemorates NASA's space shuttle programme, which ran from 1972 to 2011. The three best known space shuttles to fly during this time were Enterprise, Columbia and Challenger. They played a vital role in the programme - constructing the Hubble Space Telescope, ferrying crew and cargo to the International Space Station, and many other missions.
The coin also commemorates the brave astronauts who lost their lives in the course of the programme. In 1986, Challenger was lost soon after launch, with all seven astronauts on board perishing. Columbia was lost in 2003 on re-entry, again with all seven astronauts on board lost.
The coin is a replica of the basic shuttle design, with the US flag and NASA logo engraved on the wings. The tracking number can be found under the hinged bay door. The artwork on the back of the coin is an artistic composite of the mission insignias from both flights STS-51-L and STS-107.
Measures 6.4 cm long and 1.3 cm tall at the tail end. Trackable on geocaching.com. An icon unique to this coin will show on your profile when you log a discovery.
